RIP

The start of the new year appears to have been overshadowed by reminders that we are merely mortal. I was extremely sorry to learn of the passing of Pete Postlethwaite and Gerry Rafferty, but it is the death of Mick Karn, Japan’s bassist at the age of 52 that has moved me the most. Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum were the soundtrack of my teenage years, in the days when albums were treasured things, things of beauty, saved for, cared for, the contents devoured, the lyrics learned. I would play Nightporter in his memory, but there’s more piano to be found than bass: Quiet Life it is. Turn it up.
