Yesterday I received a cheque for £139.82 from Amazon. Not a particularly large amount, but a significant one all the same. Because the publication of my novel Half-truths and White Lies resulted from a competition-win rather than a traditional publishing deal, I received prize money rather than an advance (albeit for a not insubstantial figure). I have since received other rather more modest monetary prizes and payments from Public Lending Rights which relate to the number of times my novel has been borrowed from a public library. But, since this is the first time I have received a payment for actually selling something I have written – even though I will need to earn another £2,000 before I break even – I feel it should be celebrated and what better way than with this? Cheers!
